Lorenzo and the lads from Baobab Marine are to redo the antifoul. DIVA will be lifted out of the hole in a week or so, the antifoul taken off back to the barrier coat, reprimed and re antifouled. The shaft and prop will be scraped back, sanded and propspeed coating applied....hopefully all in time for my arrival around April 20 when she will go back in the water...and no doubt...with all the attendant maintenance issues that are inevitable after so much time sitting doing nothing ! But...c'est la vie.....pour les bateaux certainement !!
The antifouling paint on the steel rudder and skeg has cracked and is peeling off. This started within a day of Diva being out of the water. The peeling has taken off the undercoat and in some areas bare steel is visible !! The paint applicators say it s because of the temperature chnages, the steel expanding and contracting ...but does this happen to steel boats generally ?...don't know. Anyway that was organised to be fixed some time ago, but now Baobab marine have sent pictures of the antifoul on the hull surface. This picture shows hairline cracks in the antifoul paint all over the surface of the hull. Again the paint guys say it is because of the timber hull drying out...but its very humid in Fiji...I don't know if this is right or not....if anybody knows about this sort of issue, please let me know !! In any event, it now looks like the whole underwater surface of the boat will have to be sanded, primed and re-antifouled...and the current antifoul has only been on for a year |
